Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto defeated American wildcard Sloane Stephens 6-4, 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals of the Birmingham Open at Edgbaston Priory Club on Wednesday afternoon.
Cocciaretto, ranked No 44, will face the winner of the match between Russian Diana Shnaider and No 8 seed Marie Bouzkova next.
The Italian won against Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the top seed (6-3, 6-3) in the previous round of the Birmingham tournament.
During the 32 of the Birmingham tournament, Stephens, ranked No 48, won against Chinese Yue Yuan (6-3, 6-3).
