Charleston Open: Mertens books spot in last 16 against Zheng

Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 13 seed, advanced to the last 16 of the Charleston Open by winning against Frenchwoman Varvara Gracheva 6-3, 7-5 at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Wednesday.

Mertens, ranked No 28, will face Chinese Qinwen Zheng, the No 3 seed, next.

In the previous round of the tournament, Gracheva, ranked No 66, beat Harriet Dart (6-1, 3-6, 6-1).
