Russian Anna Kalinskaya reached the quarter-finals of the Citi Open when Romanian Simona Halep, the No 3 seed, retired on Wednesday evening.

Kalinskaya, ranked No 71, led 7-5, 2-0 when Halep, ranked No 16, pulled out on Wednesday.

Halep called for a medical time out, suffering from the heat (33 degrees, 42% humidity) and prefered to retire.

The Russian will play the winner of the match between Chinese Lin Zhu and Estonian Kaia Kanepi, the No 6 seed, next.

Anna Kalinskaya defeated American Madison Brengle (6-3, 6-0) in the previous round. In the 32, the Romanian won against Spanish qualifier Cristina Bucsa (6-3, 7-5).
