Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 7 seed, defeated Canadian wildcard Leylah Fernandez 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 to advance to the last 16 of the Cymbiotika San Diego Open on Tuesday.
Haddad Maia, ranked No 20, will play Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk next.
