American Varvara Lepchenko edged out Canadian Marina Stakusic, the No 7 seed, 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (3) to move into the last 16 of the Dow Tennis Classic on Tuesday evening.
Lepchenko, ranked No 142, will face Japanese qualifier Haruka Kaji next.
