Eastbourne Open: Eala reaches quarter-finals after Ostapenko retirement

Filipino qualifier Alexandra Eala moved into the last eight of the Eastbourne Open when Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 3 seed, retired on Wednesday afternoon at the Devonshire Park Lawn Club.
Eala, ranked No 74, led 0-6, 6-2, 3-2 when Ostapenko, ranked No 20, pulled out on Wednesday at the Devonshire Park Lawn Club.
The 20-year-old Filipino will face the winner of the match between Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska and wildcard Francesca Jones next.
Ahead of her victory, Alexandra Eala beat Italian Lucia Bronzetti (6-0, 6-1).
The Latvian won against Sonay Kartal (6-3, 7-6 (2)) in the previous round of the Eastbourne tournament.
