Montenegrin Danka Kovinic, the No 8 seed, moved into the last 16 of the Golden Gate Open at Stanford by edging out Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 on Monday night.

Despite Ruse breaking Kovinic five times, the world No 95 was able to escape with a victory in two hours and 17 minutes, booking her spot in the final 16 against the winner of the match between Belarusian qualifier Iryna Shymanovich and Heather Watson next.
