Indian Wells: Kvitova beats Mandlik to set up big-hitting battle against Ostapenko

Czech Petra Kvitova, the No 15 seed, defeated American wildcard Elizabeth Mandlik 6-1, 7-5 to reach the third round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells on Friday.

The two-time Wimbledon winner from the Czech Republic needed one hour and 26 minutes for the win over the daughter of another multiple Grand Slam champion from the Czech Republic, Hana Mandlikova.

Mandlik, ranked No 155 in the world, edged out Alison Riske-Amritraj (6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (1)) in the first round of the Indian Wells tournament.

Kvitova, ranked No 15, sets up an intriguing battle against one of the other big power hitters on the women’s tour, Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 24 seed, next.

The Czech holds a 5-4 edge in the head-to-head over Ostapenko, who is a former Roland-Garros champion.
