Indian Wells: Yuan upsets Kasatkina to extend win streak to nine; faces Gauff in quarters

After winning the Austin title earlier this month, Yue Yuan continues her winning roll and will make her top 40 debut next week

China’s Yue Yuan advanced to the last eight of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells by defeating Russian Daria Kasatkina, the No 11 seed, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 on Wednesday evening.

The 25-year-old came from a set and 3-1 down before storming back to win the match in two and a half hours.

This was Yuan’s ninth consecutive win on tour, having won the Austin Open title earlier this month.

Yuan, ranked No 49, was the last player through to the quarter-finals on the women’s side at the WTA 1000 Series event and will play American Coco Gauff, the No 3 seed, next.

The Chinese player had won against Frenchwoman Varvara Gracheva (6-4, 6-1), No 8 seed Qinwen Zheng (6-4, 6-3) and American Caroline Dolehide (1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2)) earlier in the week. With the win, she is also guaranteed to break into the world’s top 40 rankings for the first time next week.

With this, the quarter-final line-up for the tournament is now set:

In the previous rounds of the tournament, Kasatkina, ranked No 12, won against Frenchwoman Oceane Dodin (6-3, 7-6 (5)) and edged out American Sloane Stephens (2-6, 6-4, 6-4).
