Italian Open: Qualifier Osorio moves into round of 16, shocks seed Garcia

Colombian qualifier Camila Osorio advanced to the round of 16 at the Italian Open by defeating Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 5 seed and the world No 4, 6-4, 6-4 at the Foro Italico in Rome on Saturday.

Osorio, the current world No 100, will play the winner of the match between Pole Magda Linette, the No 17 seed, and Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 12 seed, next.

The two had only played each other once before, and it was Garcia who had won that in straight sets – earlier this year, with the home crowd behind her in the Lyon semi-final.

But this time it was the world No 100 who secured a comprehensive win – her first against a player in the top five, having lost her first quintet of matches against a woman ranked that high.

She is now through to the round of 16 at a WTA 1000 event for the first time.

The 21-year-old Colombian edged out Russian Varvara Gracheva (7-6 (4), 1-6, 7-6 (4)) and won against Croat Petra Martic, the No 29 seed (6-4, 6-2) earlier in the tournament.

In the previous round of the Rome tournament, Garcia, ranked No 4, edged out Romanian Ana Bogdan (6-4, 3-6, 7-5).
