Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 20 seed, moved into the quarter-finals of the Italian Open by winning against Russian Daria Kasatkina, the No 8 seed, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 at the Foro Italico in Rome on Monday.
Ostapenko, ranked No 20, will play the winner of the match between Spaniard Paula Badosa and Czech Karolina Muchova next.
In the previous rounds of the Rome tournament, the Latvian defeated Romanian Sorana Cirstea (6-3, 3-6, 6-2) and Czech Barbora Krejcikova, the No 10 seed (7-6 (2), 6-0).
Kasatkina, ranked No 9, beat Italian wildcard Lisa Pigato (6-1, 6-2) and edged out Austrian Julia Grabher (7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (2)) earlier in the tournament.
