Italian Open: Paolini books spot in semi-finals

Italian Jasmine Paolini continued her resurgence as she won against Russian Diana Shnaider, the No 13 seed, 6-7 (1), 6-4, 6-2 to reach the semi-finals of the Italian Open in Rome on Tuesday afternoon.

Paolini, ranked No 5, will play the winner of the match between American Peyton Stearns and Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, the No 16 seed, next.

“It was a really tough match,” Paolini said. “I’m really happy that I get through. But was a roller-coaster. Was tough. I fought until the end. The crowd, of course, helped me. So I’m really happy with the win. Was a really emotional one.”

The Italian beat New Zealander Lulu Sun (6-4, 6-3), Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the No 27 seed (6-4, 6-3) and Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 17 seed (7-5, 6-2) ahead of her victory.

Earlier in the tournament, Shnaider, ranked No 11, defeated American Caroline Dolehide (6-0, 6-0), Romanian Jaqueline Cristian (6-3, 6-3) and Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 25 seed (6-2, 6-3).
