Italian Jasmine Paolini, the No 6 seed, beat Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 17 seed, 7-5, 6-2 to reach the last 8 of the Italian Open at the Foro Italico in Roma on Monday afternoon.
Paolini, ranked No 5, will play Russian Diana Shnaider, the No 13 seed, next.
In the previous rounds of the Rome tournament, the Italian won against New Zealander Lulu Sun (6-4, 6-3) and Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the No 27 seed (6-4, 6-3).
Ostapenko, ranked No 18, defeated Slovak Rebecca Sramkova (1-6, 6-4, 6-3) and German lucky loser Laura Siegemund (W/O) earlier in the tournament.
