Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the No 11 seed, advanced to the third round of the Italian Open by winning against German Eva Lys 7-6 (3), 6-2 at the Foro Italico on Friday evening.
Rybakina, ranked No 12, will play the winner of the match between Canadian Bianca Andreescu and Croat Donna Vekic, the No 20 seed, next.
Lys, ranked No 63, beat Japanese Moyuka Uchijima (6-1, 6-0) in the previous round of the Rome tournament.
