Emma Raducanu took another step forward in her clay-court education as she beat Tereza Martincova 7-6 (3), 6-0 on Friday to reach the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open.

The US Open champion recovered from a break down in the first set and then found her best form in the second as she set up a clash with Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine.

“It was a tricky first set,” Raducanu said. “It’s always tough playing on a brand new court, it took me time to adjust to the surroundings. I’m glad I stuck through the first set and definitely relaxed and played a lot better in the second.”

Raducanu reached the quarter-finals on her WTA clay-court debut in Stuttgart last week.
