Madrid Open: Andreeva reaches fourth round for third year in a row

The 17-year-old will play the winner of the match between Russian Liudmila Samsonova, the No 18 seed, and Ukrainian qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva in the next round

Russian Mirra Andreeva, the No 7 seed, defeated Pole Magdalena Frech, the No 27 seed, 7-5, 6-3 to reach the last 16 of the Madrid Open at the Caja Mágica on Saturday.

This is the third year in a row that Andreeva has made the fourth round in Madrid, the scene of her first breakthrough in 2022. The Russian reached the quarter-finals here last year.

The victory was her 23rd of the season and she has now won 16 of her last 18 matches on the tour, including back-to-back WTA 1000 titles in Dubai and Indian Wells.

Andreeva, ranked No 7, will play the winner of the match between Russian Liudmila Samsonova, the No 18 seed, and Ukrainian qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva next.

The 17-year-old Russian won against Marie Bouzkova (6-3, 6-4) in the previous round of the tournament.

Earlier in the week, Frech, ranked No 27, edged out Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (5-7, 7-6 (2), 6-4).
