American Jessica Pegula, the No 3 seed, reached the second round of the Madrid Open by winning against Czech Marie Bouzkova, the No 29 seed, 6-4, 7-6 (2) at the Caja Magica on Sunday.
Pegula, ranked No 3 and 2022 runner-up, will face Italian Martina Trevisan, the No 18 seed, next.
The American beat Pole qualifier Magdalena Frech (7-6 (5), 6-3) in the previous round of the Madrid tournament.
In the 64 of the Madrid tournament, Bouzkova, ranked No 31, defeated Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich (6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-3).
