Madrid Open: Rybakina breezes past Sherif to reach last 16

Elena Rybakina, the No 4 seed, moved into the last 16 of the Madrid Open by defeating Egyptian Mayar Sherif 6-1, 6-4 at the Caja Magica.

The big-serving Kazakh continued her fine start to the clay-court season by earning her sixth straight win courtesy of a comfortable victory over Sherif in Madrid.

Rybakina marches into the last 16 where she will face qualifier Sara Bejlek next.

The Kazakh won against Italian Lucia Bronzetti (6-4, 6-3) in the previous round of the Madrid tournament.

In the previous rounds of the Madrid tournament, Sherif, ranked No 72, edged out American Lauren Davis (4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4) and won against Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, the No 25 seed (6-2, 7-5).
