Madrid Open: Stearns knocks out 15th seed Anisimova in second round
The American will take on the winner of the match between Kazakh Yulia Putintseva, the No 22 seed, and Swiss qualifier Rebeka Masarova in the next round

American Peyton Stearns edged out 15th-seeded countrywoman Amanda Anisimova 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 to move into the third round of the Madrid Open at the Caja Mágica on Friday afternoon.
Stearns, ranked No 44, converted on her fourth match point on the Anisimova serve in the final set and will play the winner of the match between Kazakh Yulia Putintseva, the No 22 seed, and Swiss qualifier Rebeka Masarova next.
Ahead of her win today, Stearns edged out Australian Kimberly Birrell (5-7, 6-3, 6-4) while Anisimova received a first-round bye.
