Madrid Open: Top seed Sabalenka through to third round

Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed and world No 1, won against Russian qualifier Anna Blinkova 6-3, 6-4 to move into the third round of the Madrid Open at the Caja Mágica on Friday.

This was the Belarusian’s 27th win of the season. She is a two-time champion in Madrid and also reached the final here last year.

Sabalenka will face the winner of the match between Colombian Camila Osorio and Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 28 seed, next.

In the previous round of the tournament, Blinkova, ranked No 76, defeated Hungarian qualifier Panna Udvardy (6-4, 6-2).
