Mérida Open: Sonmez advances to quarter-finals
Zeynep Sonmez got a second-set retirement from Magda Linette on Thursday in Merida. Sonmez awaits either Emma Navarro or Petra Martic.

Wild card Zeynep Sonmez moved into the quarter-finals of the Mérida Open Akron when Pole Magda Linette retired on Thursday night. The world No 88, led 6-3, 3-1 when Linette, ranked No 37, called it quits.
Sonmez will next play the winner of a match between American Emma Navarro, the top seed, and Croat qualifier Petra Martic.
In the previous round, Sonmez beat Greek Maria Sakkari, the No 8 seed (7-5, 6-2).
Linette defeated Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto (6-4, 6-0) in her first-round match.
