Rebecca Sramkova got the best of Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 3 seed, 7-6 (8), 6-3 to advance to the last eight of the Mérida Open Akron on Thursday night.
Sramkova, ranked No 40, will next play Colombian qualifier Emiliana Arango.
Ahead of her victory, the Slovak defeated New Zealander Lulu Sun (6-3, 6-1) in the first round.
