Monterrey Open: Fourth seed Mertens moves into quarter-finals

Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 4 seed, defeated Romanian qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Monterrey Open at the Estadio GNP Seguros on Thursday.

Mertens, ranked No 42, will play the winner of the match between German Tatjana Maria and Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto, the No 8 seed, next.

Ahead of her win today, the Belgian defeated Russian Diana Shnaider (6-0, 6-4). Ruse, ranked No 160, had beaten Italian Camila Giorgi (6-4, 7-5) in the previous round of the Monterrey tournament.
