Monterrey Open: Vekic through to last four

Croat Donna Vekic, the No 3 seed, edged out Belgian Ysaline Bonaventure 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (5) to reach the last 4 of the Monterrey Open at the Estadio GNP Seguros on Friday.

Vekic, ranked No 31, will play Chinese Lin Zhu, the No 5 seed, next.

The Croat benefited from the abandonment of Ukrainian qualifier Lesia Tsurenko (2-6, 5-0) and won against American wildcard Emma Navarro (6-3, 6-2) earlier in the tournament.

Bonaventure, ranked No 96, defeated Greek qualifier Despina Papamichail (7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-1) and Russian qualifier Kamilla Rakhimova (7-6 (2), 1-6, 6-3) in the previous rounds of the Monterrey tournament.
