Qatar Open: Pegula through to semi-finals

American Jessica Pegula, the No 2 seed, advanced to the semi-finals of the Qatar Open by defeating Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-3, 6-2 at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha on Thursday evening.

The American, who reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and was part of the United States team that won the United Cup last month, is now 10-2 for the season after this win.

Pegula, ranked No 4, will face the winner of the match between Greek Maria Sakkari, the No 5 seed, and Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 3 seed, next.

The American edged out Latvian Jelena Ostapenko (6-2, 2-6, 7-5) in the previous round of the Doha Open, saving two match points during that win. She is through to the last four in Doha for the second time in her career.

In the previous rounds of the Doha Open, Haddad Maia, ranked No 12 in the world, had won over Soain’s Paula Badosa (7-6 (6), 6-3) and Russian Daria Kasatkina, the No 6 seed (6-3, 7-6 (7)).
