Strasbourg Open: Burel sets up Svitolina semi-final

Frenchwoman Clara Burel advanced to the semi-finals of the Strasbourg Open by edging out American Bernarda Pera, the No 4 seed, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 at the Tennis Club de Strasbourg on Thursday evening.

Burel, ranked No 122, will face Ukrainian wildcard Elina Svitolina next.

The 22-year-old Frenchman defeated Romanian Sorana Cirstea, the No 5 seed (7-6 (5), 7-5) and Estonian Kaia Kanepi (7-5, 7-6) ahead of her victory.

Earlier in the tournament, Pera, ranked No 38, won against lucky loser Sophie Chang (6-4, 4-6, 6-1) and Australian Kimberly Birrell (6-4, 6-4).
