Barbora Krejcikova, the No 7 seed, finally thwarted home hopes, beating Estonian Anett Kontaveit, the top seed, 6-2, 6-3 to win the Tallinn Open tournament at the Forus Tennis Centre on Sunday.

The Czech – six days the senior of this pair – won her first title of the year, taking her sixth career win over a player ranked in the top ten.

“Really proud how I was able to bring my best performance for the final,” Krejcikova said afterward, quoted by the WTA website. “I was expecting that Anett is going to play fast and she would try to put me under pressure from the first point. So I was just trying to play my game, and just trying to eliminate that.”

She will be ranked No24 on Monday, still far from the rank No4 she had in 2021 after winning Roland-Garros.

Krejcikova, ranked No 27, beat Australian Ajla Tomljanovic (6-1, 7-6 (3)), Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk (7-5, 6-3), Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 3 seed (6-3, 6-4) and Swiss Belinda Bencic, the second seed (6-7 (5), 7-6 (2), 6-2) ahead of her victory.

In the previous rounds, Kontaveit, ranked No 4, defeated Chinese Xiyu Wang (3-6, 6-2, 7-5), Czech Tereza Martincova (6-2, 6-1), Belgian qualifier Ysaline Bonaventure (6-3, 3-6, 6-3) and Kaia Kanepi (6-4, 6-4).
