Tennis in the Land: Sorribes Tormo upsets third seed Kudermetova to move into quarters

Spanish lucky loser Sara Sorribes Tormo upset Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the No 3 seed, 6-4, 6-1 to reach the last eight of the Tennis in the Land at Cleveland’s Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica in Flats West Bank on Wednesday.

Sorribes Tormo, ranked No 95, will play the winner of the match between American Sloane Stephens, the No 9 seed, and Russian Mirra Andreeva next.

The Spaniard benefited from the retirement of Katerina Siniakova (6-2, 4-0) ahead of her win on Wednesday.

In the previous round, Kudermetova, ranked No 16, won against Argentinian qualifier Nadia Podoroska (3-6, 6-2, 6-1).
