Tomljanovic battles into Austin Open semi-finals
Ajla Tomljanovic outlasted Ena Shibahara in a third-set tiebreak on Friday in Austin. Tomljanovic will meet either Jessica Pegula or Anna Blinkova in the semis.
Wild card Ajla Tomljanovic advanced to the last four of the Austin Open by edging out Japanese qualifier Ena Shibahara 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (8) at the Westwood Country Club on Friday evening.
Tomljanovic, ranked No 111, will next face the winner of a match between American Jessica Pegula, the top seed, and Russian Anna Blinkova.
The Australian previously beat American Katie Volynets, the No 7 seed (7-6 (3), 7-5) and Jodie Burrage (4-6, 6-3, 6-0) in Austin.
Shibahara, ranked No 148, advanced to the quarter-finals by defeating Slovenian qualifier Kaja Juvan (2-6, 6-3, 6-2) and Australian Kimberly Birrell (6-3, 4-6, 6-4).
