Two days after her Washington title, Leylah Fernandez crashes out early in Montreal

Beaten by Maya Joint, whom she had dominated eight days earlier, the Canadian missed out on entering “her” WTA 1000.

Just days after lifting the biggest title of her career in Washington, Leylah Fernandez couldn’t keep the magic going at home. The 22-year-old Canadian was knocked out in the first round of the WTA 1000 in Montreal on Tuesday, beaten 6-4, 6-1 by Australia’s Maya Joint — a player she had comfortably defeated just a few days earlier in Washington (6-3, 6-3).

Arriving late in Quebec after her triumph over Kalinskaya in the Washington final, the world No. 24 looked short on freshness — and perhaps rhythm — in a match she never really managed to take control of. Her opponent, on the other hand, seized her opportunity with maturity and poise.

Quick revenge for Joint

At just 19 years old, Maya Joint continues her spectacular rise. Already a two-time WTA title winner in 2025 (Rabat and Eastbourne), the Australian recently broke into the Top 50 and has been turning heads across the tour. Her convincing win over Fernandez only reinforces her status as one of the breakout stars of the season.

She will face McCartney Kessler in the second round, with a potential third-round clash looming against Mirra Andreeva, who received a walkover after Bianca Andreescu’s withdrawal.
