Venus Williams bows out in Washington last 16: “I know I’m going to play better”

Just two days after a triumphant return against Peyton Stearns, Venus Williams was eliminated from the Washington Open on Thursday night by Poland’s Magdalena Frech (6-2, 6-2). Despite the loss, the American remains optimistic about what’s to come.

The fairytale comeback was short-lived. Venus Williams, 45, couldn’t replicate the magic of her first-round win in Washington, where she had impressed with a commanding victory over world No.35 Peyton Stearns (6-3, 6-4) – her first singles win since August 2023. But in her second match, the former world No.1 was clearly out of fuel, falling in straight sets to world No.24 Magdalena Frech (6-2, 6-2) in just 1 hour and 13 minutes.

Up against a solid baseliner, the seven-time Grand Slam champion struggled physically and mentally. After a competitive start, she lost seven games in a row and never recovered.

« I just didn’t have any juice today unfortunately, » Williams admitted. « I tried to find some energy, but I couldn’t. Four matches in the first week – with two in doubles – it’s a lot! »

Despite the frustration, Williams found reasons to be encouraged by a week filled with match play and regained rhythm: « I had so much fun, and I got to play a lot of matches here – that’s a plus. I couldn’t be happier with my first week back. The good news is that I still control the points. The important part is putting the ball in the court – and that’s what I didn’t do today. But I know I can play better, and I know I’m going to play better. »

Looking ahead, Venus Williams will continue her summer swing at the WTA 1000 in Cincinnati (August 7–18), where she received a wildcard. She’s also expected to take part in the US Open (August 24 – September 7), teaming up with compatriot Reilly Opelka in mixed doubles. A new chapter in a legendary career that Venus isn’t ready to close just yet.
