WTA Elite Trophy: Haddad Maia beats Garcia to book semi-final berth
The Brazilian joins Daria Kasatkina in the last four of the WTA Elite Trophy
Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia booked a semi-final berth at the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai after a straight sets win over France’s Caroline Garcia on Friday.
Seeded eighth, Haddad Maia needed one hour and 37 minutes to beat Garcia for her second consecutive win in the Camellia Group. She had defeated second seed Madison Keys 6-4, 6-4 earlier in the week to improve to 2-0 in the event, which is the second-tier season-ending event on the WTA Tour.
Haddad Maia, who also reached the semi-finals at Roland-Garros earlier this year, hit 13 winners along with nine unforced errors while Garcia (the tour leader in aces in 2023) hit 25 winners but also made 31 unforced errors during the contest.
Haddad Maia joins Russia’s Daria Kasatkina in the last four. The other two semi-finalists will be determined by the end of Friday following the completion of the other group matches.
The Brazilian is also through to the doubles final this week with partner Veronika Kudermetova.
