Who would be the ideal commissioner for tennis? – Match Points excerpt
Match Points is a talk show about tennis, hosted by Josh Cohen for Tennis Majors. In this extract, Josh asked our three guests who would be the best commissioner for tennis.
For this first Match Points episode, our three guests here are Serena Williams’ coach Patrick Mouratoglou, the ATP world number 225 and founder of Behind the Racquet Noah Rubin, and the American tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg. In this episode, they discussed the possible merger between the ATP and the WTA, and the current tennis governance.
Who would be the ideal commissioner for tennis? That’s one of the questions Josh Cohen asked our three guests. Patrick Mouratoglou had already explained we would go for Roger Federer:
“I said Roger and I stick to Roger. Because again, when he says something, everybody listens, everybody agrees most of the time. If one person can bring all these governing bodies together one day, it is going to be him. “
Noah Rubin didn’t have a person in mind but described a profile:
“I am looking for an entrepreneur, mid-thirties. There is nobody at the top of my list right now.”
Ben Rothenberg went for Venus Williams:
“I am not handsome enough to get more than one name. I am going to throw a new name, I will say Venus Williams. She is another player with a lot of experience negotiating things. She is an untrusted name in tennis. So I would say Venus Williams.”
