Kiki Bertens ends career with first-round loss at Tokyo Olympics
After struggling with injuries over the past year, the former world No 4 and 10-time WTA singles titlist played the final match of her career at the Tokyo Olympics

- What happened: 16th seed Kiki Bertens was defeated by Czech Marketa Vondrousova 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the first round of the women’s singles event at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday
- Why it matters: This was Bertens’ final tournament before retirement. The Dutchwoman peaked at No 4 in the world rankings in 2019. Bertens ends her career with 10 WTA singles titles, the biggest of them being the Madrid Open title in 2019. She also reached the semi-finals of the French Open in 2016 and the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in 2018.
- Key stat: Bertens won 94 points in the one-hour, 56-minute contest as compared to 85 points for Vondrousova but it was the Czech woman who came away the winner
- Other key information: The conditions were extremely hot at the Ariake Tennis Park on Saturday with temperatures reaching 33 degrees Celsius in Tokyo.
- What next : Vondrousova, a former French Open runner-up, will next meet either Alison Riske or Mihaela Buzarnescu in the second round in Tokyo
