Monterrey Open: Cocciaretto advances to QF clash against Mertens

Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto, the No 8 seed, reached the quarter-finals of the Monterrey Open by beating German Tatjana Maria 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) at the Estadio GNP Seguros on Thursday.
Cocciaretto, ranked No 49 in the world, will play Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 4 seed, next.
Ahead of her victory, the 22-year-old Italian defeated Spanish lucky loser Marina Bassols Ribera (7-5, 6-2).
Maria, ranked No 73, won against Italian Lucia Bronzetti (6-1, 6-0) in the previous round of the Monterrey tournament.
