Auger-Aliassime: “I’m not going to Metz, my health above all”

Félix Auger-Aliassime, disturbed all week by physical issues he kept to himself, has decided not to secure his place for the ATP Finals at the Moselle Open.

Félix Auger-Aliassime concluded his press conference following his final at the Rolex Paris Masters by announcing he would not play at the ATP 250 Metz tournament this week. As the number one seed, the Canadian had the opportunity to secure his eighth qualifying spot for the ATP Finals in a close race with Lorenzo Musetti, the world No. 9 and entrant in Athens.

However, Auger-Aliassime prefers to rest in order to “not repeat the same mistakes as in the past.” “I struggled physically this week,” he said. “I don’t talk about it much, but I’ve had many physical issues this week.”

“My physical condition and health are truly my priority. They come before qualification. If I qualify, great. If not, Lorenzo will deserve his spot. But this is my decision.”

Musetti must win Athens

Auger-Aliassime added that he would still attend Turin as a potential alternate if necessary, but without sacrificing these few days of rest. The Canadian had withdrawn from the Basel quarterfinals ten days ago due to a knee issue, which he managed to keep under control in Paris despite playing three matches that all went to three sets.

After the Rolex Paris Masters, Musetti trails Auger-Aliassime by 200 points in the race for the ATP Finals. Musetti must win the tournament to overtake the Canadian.
