Argentina Open: Varillas beats Thiem to reach quarter-finals

Peruvian qualifier Juan Pablo Varillas defeated Austrian wildcard Dominic Thiem 6-4, 6-4 to move into the quarter-finals of the Argentina Open at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club on Thursday.
Varillas, ranked No 101, will face the winner of the match between Argentinian Pedro Cachin and Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the No 3 seed, next.
The Peruvian had won against Portuguese João Sousa (6-2, 7-5) in the previous round of the Buenos Aires Open. He is now 1-1 lifetime against Thiem on the tour.
Meanwhile, Thiem, a two-time former champion at this event and now ranked No 99 in the world, had defeated Slovak Alex Molcan, the No 7 seed (7-6 (4), 6-3).
