British wildcard Ryan Peniston advanced to the last 16 of the Rothesay International Eastbourne by beating Danish teen Holger Rune in three sets on Tuesday.
Playing just his second ATP tour level match on clay, the eighth seeded Rune won the first set 6-4 over the 147th ranked Peniston. Both players held their serve through the second set to take it into a tiebreak.
Peniston, aged 26, won that 7-5 and then romped to a 6-1 win in the final set to complete the 4-6, 7-6, 6-1 win in exactly two hours.
With the loss, Holger Rune falls to 0-2 on grass on the ATP Tour, having lost in the first round in Halle last week.
Peniston’s reward is a second round showdown against either Alejandro Davidovich Fokina or Pedro Martinez.
