Cincinnati Masters: Mannarino upsets Paul to set up a match vs. Sinner
Adrian Mannarino edged out Tommy Paul 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 on Monday night and will play Italian Jannik Sinner, the top seed, in the next round

French qualifier Adrian Mannarino edged out American Tommy Paul, the No 13 seed, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 to move into the last 16 of the Cincinnati Masters at the Lindner Family Tennis Center on Monday night. The lefty capped an incredible day for French tennis, following Bonzi’s win over Tsitsipas and Atmane’s victory against Fonseca.
Mannarino, ranked No 89, will play Italian Jannik Sinner, the top seed, next. Italian Jannik Sinner, the top seed, beat Canadian Gabriel Diallo, the No 30 seed, 6-2, 7-6 (6).
The 37-year-old Frenchman has won two of his latest eleventh matches against Top 20 players. Two of them against Tommy Paul, who was already defeated by Mannarino at the Rolex Paris Masters 2024.
It’s the first time in two years that Mannarino wins three matches at the Masters 1000 level. He won against Czech Tomas Machac, the No 19 seed (6-3, 6-3) and Australian Jordan Thompson (6-2, 6-2) in the previous rounds of the Cincinnati tournament. “Manna” has reached the quarterfinals in Cincinnati in 2023, his best run at this stage (with the Canadian Open 2017).
Since the format’s introduction in 1990, Adrian Mannarino (37years and 39 days) is now the second-oldest qualifier to reach the round of16 at an ATP Masters 1000 event, younger than only Radek Stepanek (37 years 240 dqyw, Toronto 2016).
With Bonzi and Atmane, three unseeded Frenchmen will play the round of 16 at Cincinnati.
In the previous round of the Cincinnati tournament, Paul, ranked No 16, defeated Spaniard Pedro Martinez Portero (6-2, 6-2).
