“It’s time to take a break” – Sinner looking to recharge ahead of Wimbledon

After his surprise defeat against Alexander Bublik in the second round in Halle, world No 1 Jannik Sinner opened up with frankness in a press conference, conceding that the pressure accumulated since Roland-Garros was still being felt.

Defeated by an opponent ranked outside the top 20, a first since August 2023, the defending champion in Halle admitted the scars of Paris were still affecting him.

“It’s not easy to play here after what happened in Paris…” he said, in a direct reference to his defeat in the Roland-Garros final against Carlos Alcaraz, a match that has remained in everyone’s mind.

“I had my chances to win,” Sinner explained after his defeat. “In the second set, he gave me little room to manoeuvre with his serve, but in the third, I had situations that could have turned the match in my favour. I felt that everything was going to be decided in two or three points. I tried everything, but it was impossible, he was better in the key moments.”

Finally acknowledging that “it’s time to take a break”, the Italian has implied that he is physically and mentally fatigued after an intense couple of months between Rome and Paris.

Despite this early elimination, Sinner’s performance in Halle is nothing to worry about. The world No 1 is staying the course and is now turning his attention to preparing for Wimbledon, with a clear priority: to recharge his batteries after a particularly busy first half of the year.

“I’m relatively satisfied that I was able to play two matches on grass before Wimbledon,” he said after his defeat.

Sinner now has about ten days to recharge his batteries before tackling the third Grand Slam of the season.
