Frace’s Arthur Fils enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2023, winning his first ATP singles title and climbing from outside the top 250 to No 36 in the world rankings. After being named the ATP Newcomer of the Year on Thursday, the 19-year-old said he hopes that the 2024 season will be better.

“I’m really happy to win the ATP Newcomer of the Year,” Fils told the ATP Tour website. “It’s been an amazing year for me with a lot of good memories. I hope next year is going to be better, but thanks for the support all around the world.”

“It was a nice year for sure. I started at 250 but finished at 36, so that’s pretty good. It still could have been better. I lost some close matches, but it’s just experience, and I will try to do better next year.”

Fils, who also reached the final of the ATP Next Gen Finals in Jeddah to end the season on a strong note and then headed to the Mid-East to train with Rafael Nadal as part of his off-season program, follows in the footsteps of Holger Rune, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner as winners of the Newcomer of the Year award in recent years.
