Croat Borna Coric, the No 9 seed, moved into the second round of the Japan Open by defeating Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-4, 7-6 (4) at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo on Tuesday.

Coric, ranked No 28, will face American Brandon Nakashima next.
