Madrid Masters: Fritz moves into last 16

American Taylor Fritz, the No 8 seed, defeated Chilean Cristian Garin 6-1, 7-6 (4) to advance to the last 16 of the Madrid Masters at the Caja Magica on Monday.

The world No 10 has now extended his record in tiebreaks this season to 15-3, with his record on clay seven wins and two losses.

Fritz, ranked No 10, will face the winner of the match between Chinese Zhizhen Zhang and No 11 seed Cameron Norrie next.

The American won against Australian Christopher O’Connell (7-6 (11), 6-4) ahead of his victory.

Earlier in the tournament, Garin, ranked No 73, won against Swiss Marc-Andrea Huesler (7-6 (5), 6-2) and edged out Serb Miomir Kecmanovic, the No 27 seed (7-6 (3), 6-7 (5), 6-4).
