German Alexander Zverev, the No 4 seed, held off a late fightback from Canadian Denis Shapovalov to win 6-4, 7-5 and move into the last 16 of the Madrid Masters at the Caja Magica on Sunday night.

Zverev, ranked No 5, will face Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 21 seed, next.

Ahead of his victory, the German defeated Croat Borna Coric (6-3, 6-2).

Shapovalov, ranked No 132, won against Argentinian Facundo Diaz Acosta (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) and Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the No 26 seed (7-6 (3), 6-3) in the previous rounds of the Madrid tournament.
