Defending champion Hubert Hurkacz ended the run of former US Open champion Dominic Thiem as he claimed a 6-3, 6-4 win over the Austrian to reach the quarter-finals of the Metz Open on Thursday.

The second seed and world No 10 hit 12 aces and saved both break points to deny Thiem, who is making his way back from a serious wrist injury.

“Dominic’s an unbelievable player,” Hurkacz said. “It’s not easy to come back from such a tough injury. He’s working super-hard so hopefully he’ll get there very soon.”

Hurkacz, will face Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech for a place in the semi-finals.

“I’m definitely going to try my best to compete as hard as I can because there are a lot of great players in this tournament,” he added.

In the previous round, Thiem, ranked No 182, defeated French wildcard Richard Gasquet (6-3, 7-6 (3)).
