Portuguese Nuno Borges moved into the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters when Dane Holger Rune, the No 10 seed, retired on Tuesday afternoon at the Monte-Carlo Country Club.
Borges, ranked No 43, led 6-2, 3-0 when Rune, ranked No 12, pulled out at Monte-Carlo Country Club on Tuesday.
The Portuguese will play Spaniard Pedro Martinez Portero next.
