Moutet stuns Medvedev to reach biggest semi-final of his career at Citi DC Open
Corentin Moutet edged out Daniil Medvedev 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Friday evening and will face the winner of the match between Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 7 seed, and American Brandon Nakashima, the No 14 seed, in the next round

Corentin Moutet delivered the biggest win of his career so far, defeating No. 8 seed Daniil Medvedev 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 in a dramatic Mubadala Citi DC Open quarter-final in Washington on Friday. The match featured wild momentum swings, a storm-induced suspension at 5-4 in the third set, and a chaotic finish that saw Medvedev commit three double faults in the final game.
Medvedev, world No. 14, dominated the opening set by breaking Moutet twice to take it 6-1. Moutet responded in the second set with a break in the fifth game. Although serving for the set at 5-3, he was broken back but soon capitalized on Medvedev’s mounting pressure, including a crucial double fault, to break again and close out the set 6-4.
The deciding set was a tense battle of serves with no breaks until the final game. Moutet, visibly hampered by cramps and having saved six break points during the set, seized his chance for victory.
Medvedev’s three double faults
Medvedev, serving to stay in the match at 4-5, cracked under pressure, sending three double faults in the game. On Moutet’s third match point, the two engaged in what French media described as a crazy rally, which ended with Medvedev firing a wild forehand long, securing the Frenchman’s place in the semi-finals.
This win marks Moutet’s third Top 20 victory of the 2025 season, following wins over No. 10 Holger Rune at the Rome Masters 1000 and No. 4 Taylor Fritz at Queen’s Club, where he saved a match point. Entering the tournament as a lucky loser, Moutet’s resilience and unpredictable style have made him one of the sport’s standout stories this year. The result will see him break into the ATP Top 50 rankings on Monday for the first time.
Moutet was a lucky loser!
For Medvedev, the loss continues a mixed 2025 campaign. The Russian, currently ranked 14th, has yet to claim a title this year and has recorded some inconsistent results. His run in Washington included wins over Chinese qualifier Yibing Wu and American Reilly Opelka before falling at the quarter-final stage. The defeat was a frustrating one for Medvedev, who threw his racquet and smashed his metal water bottle after the match.
In the Citi DC Open draw, Moutet now awaits the winner of the quarter-final between No. 7 seed Alex de Minaur and No. 14 Brandon Nakashima as he chases his first ATP 500 final. Meanwhile, on the opposite half, No. 4 Ben Shelton faces No. 6 Frances Tiafoe in their semi-final clash.
