Rome Masters: Machac reaches third round defeating Tien, Paul next

No 19 seed Tomas Machac moved into the third round of the Rome Masters by winning against American Learner Tien 6-4, 6-4 at the Foro Italico in Rome on Saturday.

It was Machac’s second win on clay this year on the ATP Tour after defeating Baez in Monte-Carlo, and then losing against De Minaur and Fearnley in Madrid. The Czech started the clay season by reaching the final at UTS Nîmes.

Machac, ranked No 20, will play American Tommy Paul, the No 11 seed, next.

Tien, ranked No 70, defeated Reilly Opelka (6-4, 7-6 [11]) in the previous round of the Italian Open, which was his first win ever at Masters 1000 level.
