Andrey Rublev, the No 5 seed, recovered from a first-set deficit to beat Serb Hamad Medjedovic 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 and reach the final of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell on Saturday.
The Russian, ranked No 15, dropped the opener but dominated the last two sets to close out the match, advancing to his first final at the ATP 500 event in Barcelona. Rublev had not dropped a set through his first three matches in Catalonia, beating Argentine Mariano Navone, Italian Lorenzo Sonego and Czech Tomas Machac before running into sharper resistance from Medjedovic.
The Serb, ranked No 88, had been one of the stories of the week, arriving from qualifying and eliminating No 3 seed Alex de Minaur along the way. He pushed Rublev hard in the first set before the Russian’s greater experience told over two efficient closing sets.
Rublev will face the winner of the second semi-final between Frenchman Arthur Fils, the No 9 seed, and Spaniard Rafael Jodar in Sunday’s final.
