Swiss Indoors: Fonseca moves into last 8 as Mensik withdraws
Joao Fonseca benefited from the forfeit of Jakub Mensik on Thursday night and will play the winner of the match between French lucky loser Valentin Royer and Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the No 9 seed, in the next round

Brazilian rising star João Fonseca advanced to the quarter-finals of the Swiss Indoors Basel on Wednesday without hitting a ball, as his opponent, No. 7 seed Jakub Menšík of the Czech Republic, withdrew from their scheduled second-round match.
Menšík, the world No. 19, pulled out due to a left foot injury just before the match at the St. Jakobshalle, giving the 19-year-old Fonseca a walkover victory into the last eight.
Fonseca, currently ranked No. 46, will face the winner of the match between French lucky loser Valentin Royer and Canadian No. 9 seed Denis Shapovalov in his second career ATP 500 quarter-final. The Royer-Shapovalov match is scheduled for later on Thursday.
Fonseca’s progression to the second round came via a hard-fought win on Tuesday against the defending Basel champion, Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The Brazilian won in straight sets, 7-6 (6), 6-3, in a match that lasted just under 90 minutes.
